Identity theft companies are security companies that offer a certain security service pack to consumers to help battle identity theft.
Usually, Anti-Identity theft companies offer the following services:
1. Fraud alert and customer notification – If you suspect that you either are already a victim or can be a victim due to financial status or by professional nature, identity theft companies can contact the credit bureaus and request that a fraud alert be added to your profile. This requires credit granters to verify the owner of an account before opening it.
2. Continued fraud alert renewals – The identity theft company will automatically renew the fraud alert status until otherwise notified by the customer. The fraud alert is renewed every ninety days.
3. Removal from mailing lists – If you hired one, identity theft companies can ask that your name be removed from mailing lists that generate pre-approved credit and insurance offers, keeping down the number of mailings you receive which can be stolen from your mailbox and used to open fraudulent accounts.
4. Complimentary credit reports - The Company will usually order your free annual credit reports and forward them to you for your review.
The ones above are only basic protection services. In addition to these basic services, some companies can offer:
1. For an extra charge, if you report your purse or wallet lost or stolen, the company will notify your bank and credit card issuers to cancel accounts and complete the paperwork to have new cards/checks issued. This generally excludes cash or personal items.
2. They will search databases to ensure that you personal data are not being used in known illegal activities. They will inform you if anything is found, but will generally not intervene on your behalf.
3. The company will notify you if they find any new address information is associated to any of your accounts, thus warding off potential theft of existing credit accounts.
Many of these companies will guarantee their services, but with certain restrictions, so be sure to read the fine print before deciding whether or not an identity theft protection program is right for you.
